The Devil Wears Prada
Based on the hit novel by Lauren Weisberger, this movie relates to today's modern businesswomen who keep trying to have a life, but wonder why that never happens. Although I've not read the novel, I must say that I like the movie adaptation. Meryl Streep truly captures the essence of her character, Miranda Priestly, a seemingly cold woman who cares nothing about people but all about her career in the fashion world. She runs a highly circulated fashion magazine, Runway, and has currently plowed through a number of personal assistants, calling them all disappointments.
Enter Anne Hathaway's naive Andy Saks. She has just come to shiny New York City after graduating college, looking for a job in journalism. All the career agency can find her is Ms. Priestly's personal assistant job, so she goes to interview. Unfortunately, she has no idea how to dress fashionably. She quickly learns that if she's going to make it in her new job, she's going to need to try to fit in with the rest of the fashionistas. With a little help from her friend Nigel, she soon learns the difference between Prada and Dolce & Gabbana.
With all this concern over her job though, she has little time for her personal life, and she's constantly catering to Miranda's every demanding whim. This bowing down to Miranda gets so bad that she even misses her boyfriend's birthday. All the while, it seems that Miranda is shaping Andy to become just like her, taking her to Paris for a big fashion event. It's here in the city of lights that Andy starts to see herself in the mirror when she looks at Miranda, and walks away from her life-sucking job.
Overall, this movie shows the conflict of a woman trying to make a career in New York, as well as the sacrifices that have to be made sometimes. It has all the elements of a fun movie for a girl's night out. There is plenty of romance, fashion, conflict, loss, and comedy for the feminine audience and maybe even a boyfriend or two.
